"Without grammar very little can be conveyed; without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed" This sentence means that no words and you can not read anything. There are many problems that Vietnamese students encounter in reading lessons but for me the most frequent problem is vocabulary because vocabulary plays a fundamental role in reading process. A reader cannot understand a text without knowing what most of the words mean.
And the best way to solve this problem is widening students' vocabulary by learning new words through the passage or essay. Encourage students read at a level slightly lower than you understand, advise them not to have to look up a lot of words , it's okay to check a few words. Besides, encourage students to read what interest them, think about the author or journalist they love to find the document to read.

Re: Oral Discussion: Learners' difficulties in reading

Most Vietnamese students find it confusing to approach reading lessons because of some following reasons.
- Firstly, they have difficulty in many unknown words so they can't cover the main idea of the text comprehensively.
- Secondly, most Vietnamese students have little background knowledge about unusual topic.
- Thirdly, many students still don't understand organization structure of a reading text clearly. Moreover, lack of strategies, materials, background knowledge of grammar and low motivations can result in the failure in reading comprehension.
To improve their reading ability, the teacher should provide them useful strategies and instruct them clearly before they start their reading tasks. Simultaneously, teachers should provide books at the right levels and create more interesting activities for them to remember the topics or the themes better. Moreover, encourage them to build more vocabulary after the lessons.

Lack of reading skills and background knowledge are another difficulties. Some contents are strange to them so they don't understand what they read.

Vienammese students meet many difficulties in reading lessons beccause of the following reasons
First, They have poor source of vocabulary especially academic words, collocation and idioms.
Seccond, I think the knowledge of different aspects such as culture, policy, science and etc also challenges them to understand the passages of these topics.
Last, they don't have enough competence of reading skills.
So, it is better to enhance their vocabulary, general knowledge and reading skill..

In my opinion, the most frequent problem students in Vietnam encounter in reading lessons is that they lack vocabulary and background knowledge. A reader cannot understand a text without knowing what most of the words mean. Also, if they don't have background knowledge it is difficult to understand the reading passage.
To solve this problem, teacher should help students to build up their vocabulary and guide them to read from easier text to more difficult one.

Besides listening, learners find it hard to improve reading skill because of the following reasons. Firstly, It seems that most of the learners do not use the strategies correctly. I mean learners even do not know to use any strategies for a certain question. So they complete the reading question passively. Secondly, Vocabulary is a barrier. Leaners tendto be frightened by new vocabulary items in the reading text and they hardly overcome that scare. In fact, dealting with new words sucessfully is an essential skill. The last reason is that the learners misunderstand reading skill with reading. We read books, newspaper, letters for different purposes without clear strategy, but reading comprehension improve the learners some skill.

In my opinion, the most frequent problems Vietnamese learners encounter in reading lessons is being unable to understand new words. Students should be encouraged to be self-equipped with technical vocabulary and knowledge in reading. subject matters by searching for the meaning of new technical vocabulary and reading the in-advance-given reading materials in order to get familiar with technical words and concepts used in reading lessons. In respect of teachers, it is advisable that different pre-reading activities should be carried out so as to trigger students’ prior knowledge by applying the interactive reading method. Moreover, teachers should also supply reading materials to students so that their students can understand concepts and terminology used in the class reading texts.
